Restoring the camera
This is a c. 1950 Deardorff 5X7 wooden field view camera. The same basic design as those used in 1800’s. It is one of the most used cameras I own now. When I received the camera it was unusable. The finished was cracked and peeling, the movements erratic and the bellows had holes in it. The image on the left is the shape the camera was in when I bought it. On the right, the same camera after a 3 month complete restoration. The camera was completely disassembled, all wood was stripped and refinished, the metal was cleaned and polished and then a new custom made bellows installed. The camera is shown with a 1885 Dallmayer brass lens mounted. And the camera back is a 4X5.
