Equipment

The equipment used to produce the images in the project is the same or actual type of equipment used in the 1880’s.

There are several wood field view cameras currently used in this project. Some are Chicago made Deardorff cameras. The oldest was made around 1950 and the newest around 1970. They are functionally equivalent to those used in the 19th century and are made of mahogany. Two of the cameras had to  be restored to shooting condition. The 8×10 (V8) has had the bellows repaired, but is otherwise all original. The 5×7 has been completely disassembled, stripped, cleaned, polished and reassembled with a new bellows.

The lenses used are all 19th Century original brass lenses, Voightlanders, Darlots and Dallmayer. They are of varying focal lengths. Exposure is controlled via aperture wheels or waterhouse stops, supplemented with correction filters.

The tripods are wood made by Miller in Australia. They have been slightly modified to assist in getting the camera on and off the tripod head and to assist in getting the camera perfectly level.
